If you're the kind of person who likes to jump right into a program
(who isn't) then this is the file for YOU. However, this file is
needed more with DRAW! than most programs. So just print me up, and
we'll have FUN, FUN, FUN! Hopefully.
First of all, from the DOS prompt simply type DRAW!. This will, of
course load and and execute DRAW!.EXE. This done, you are presented a
prompt for Filename? There is a list of files with the extension PIC
just below this, so you can pick one already there. However, we're
going to create our own file. So, type in "starter" and hit <Enter>.
Then, you will be presented a blank screen. Great, eh?
What you want do do here is draw. To do this, simply hit [F2]. You
will a high pitched beep. Now, press one of the arrow keys on your
numeric keypad (make sure NumLock is off), and there, look, up in the
left-hand corner of your screen...a DOT! Well, keep moving around with
your arrows (diagonals or OK, too) till you get bored of this.
Next, we're going to make a circle. So, hit [Alt][C]. You will be
presented with a nice little menu. For now, we're just going to be
content with the default settings, so hit <D> to "Draw according to
current parameters." Nice,eh?
Now, we will give your little masterpiece a border! This is done by
selecting [Alt][B] for Boxes. Again, we will only concentrate on one
part of the menu, so hit <B> for Border. Looks nice, too!
One of the nicest things about DRAW! is its line drawing abilities. I
set out to make this feature in the grand old style of MacPaint and
other megaexpensive programs (of course, you still need a Macintosh!).
To access this feature, hit [Alt][L]. The little cross you see, called
"The Pointer" is an important and much-used part of DRAW! In the Lines
section, it is used to specify the starting point of the line. So,
move the Pointer to the starting point, and hit <Enter>. Nothing. Just
great. Now, we're back to moving the arrow keys again (no diagonals
this time, sorry). Try it, in all four directions, too! (Incidentally,
if NumLock is on while you're doing this, the line will jump by 10 or
20 pixels.)
Remember that circle you just drew? Well, we're going to paint it now.
To do this, hit...you guessed it, [Alt][P]. Once again, we have a
bunch of options. Here we will pick <P> to Point to the area being
painted. After hitting this, you will be shown the Pointer. Simply
move it anywhere in the area you want painted, and hit <Enter>. Now we
want to pick a shade. So far, I've only got two, but there should be
more to come in future versions! So, pick whichever one you want, and
the circle (or wherever you happened to point) is filled in!
One final function: merge screens. This one is activated by [Alt][M].
After hitting this, you will go back to a screen very much like the
opening screen. Here, pick a filename to merge with the current screen
(starter.pic) and hit <Enter>. There, the files are quite meshed!
If you feel that this is a true work of art, hit [F4], and your
drawing will be saved to disk as starter.pic. If not, hit [Alt][R] to
access the DOS shell (neat!) or [Alt][Q] to exit DRAW!, so you can
print the manual and learn even more about DRAW!.
If you use or plan to use DRAW! frequently, please register by mailing
a check or money order to:
